Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)
At Perspectives Counselling & Psychological Services, we believe the most effective mechanisms for change are through education, the therapeutic relationship and hope.
The entire therapeutic process is an educational experience. Individuals learn their own contribution to the present situation, enabling them to recognize their own power and ability to produce change.
Change is contagious and once adaptive behaviors are identified, labeled and positively reinforced, they can often trigger more change.
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is based on the idea that our thoughts cause our feelings and behaviors, not external things, such as people, situations, and or events. The benefit of this is that we can change the way we think to feel / act better even if the situation does not change.
CBT is one of the few forms of therapy that has been scientifically tested and found to be effective in hundreds of clinical trials for many different disorders. Clients learn specific skills that they can use for the rest of their lives. These skills involve identifying distorted thinking, modifying beliefs, relating to others in different ways, and changing behaviors.
When people are in distress, their perspective is often inaccurate and their thoughts may be unrealistic. CBT helps people identify their distressing thoughts and evaluate how realistic the thoughts are. Then they learn to change their distorted thinking. When they think more realistically, they feel better. The emphasis is also consistently on solving problems and initiating behavioral change.
At Perspectives Counselling, CBT is one of the therapeutic modalities often used to treat anxiety and depression challenges.
